ARCHAEOLOGY DAY 2009 Can You Dig It? (Seventh Grade) page 2 of 2

Guidelines

1. Get into your assigned groups and collect the required materials: clipboards, brushes, trowel, ruler, writing utensils, and this handout.
2. Find your dig site. They are numbered with pink flags.
3. Make a plan. Get organized before you dig. Who is doing what?
4. Carefully begin your dig. Scoop extra dirt into the provided box and sift through for any missed artifacts. All sites have approximately 16-20 artifacts, depending on how some of them are counted. Carefully uncover the artifacts. Do not move them! Their location is critical to figuring out what happened.
5. Once you have uncovered the artifacts, take a picture. Include some group members in the photo so we can identify whose site it was.
6. Begin your sketches.
7. Once you have finished your sketches, work with your group to answer the remaining questions in your archaeologist notebook

Remember, handle these artifacts with care! Some of them are REAL, ANCIENT ARTIFACTS! Most of them have been leant to us and must be returned
