Day of the Dead Altars:

These were a major project in both the 9th and the 11th grade classes this fall and the different groups did them differently. The 9th graders made 2-D altars, complete with a bilingual dedication in an envelope and a collage that explained their admiration for and their connection to the person. In the letter they also explained what they had learned about the artifacts of the day and why and how they were used to express love. They chose artifacts also that represented the person they were celebrating and showed these in their writing explanations and in the work they did creatively. The altars were used as examples in the community--the 9 th ones were on display and used in the classrooms of the Center for New Americans and the 11th ones were on display at at the Mexican restaurant, Mi Tierra in Hadley with an invitation for community comments.
